Cps gifted testing results11/23/2023 ![]() Many thanks to you and any others in the community. Lastly – since you seem to have amassed an enormous bit of CPS knowledge – any thots re LaSalle…Why is this magnet so much better regarded than most others? Reports of massive intra-year gifted teacher turnover? Do you or the community know anything about Pritzker? There seems to be a bad vibe between the Principal and gifted teachers regarding the integration of the neighborhood kids and gifted….all one school stuff. Pritzker on the other hand we were resoundingly underwhelmed by. We are quite impressed with decauter – despite the distance – think it is worth the effort to make that work. luckily also have a la salle slot and low waitlist number. Both scored high (must have been a good breakfast) and got in…however one into pritzker gifted and the other decauter classical. So as I am brand new to CPS – one of those private school families suddenly on the edge in this economy – we had our kids tested. I’m brand new to the site and have been relieved/entertained by your ability to hit on so many topics I have been chewing on this CPS season…notably the good bit of game theory involved in the gifted/classical testing process (school ordering) and waitlisting. Thanks for all your detailed and frequent posting. To reach CPSObsessed for questions, personal advice, commiserating, or random thoughts, please email me at adad | Apat 11:16 pm I’m excited about being part of the new program at the school and to be a CPS parent and get the full city-school experience, but also a bit nervous about the potential obstacles or frustrations that may lie ahead. Ultimately, the administration at the New Gifted School continued to impress me repeatedly… enough to overcome our nervousness about CPS. I spent hours upon hours talking to anyone and everyone who would listen/share about their opinions and experiences. The decision to leave the cushy private school enviroment for CPS was a big one. ![]() Sure, his grandmother thinks he’s a genius but he seems like a regular kid to me - certainly not any different than the other kids his age I converse with (conversations being mainly about Sponge Bob and superheroes, of course, so how intellectual can it get?) I say luck because I can’t help but wonder if there was a score mix-up of some sort. Luck was on our side and he tested into a new Regional Gifted Center that is opening in Fall 2008 at what I will call the New Gifted School. But being the education-obsessed mom that I am, I had to get him tested for the Gifted/Classical schools. Our son spent his first 2 years of PreK at a private Montessori school. (No, my brain had seemingly not grasped that “choice” is mainly an illusion in the Chicago school universe.) **As of Fall 2009, I’m the mom of a 6-year-old who is first grade in one of the regional gifted centers.** A significant portion of my braintime for the past few years has been spent researching the different opportunities for education in our city and determining which school will be the best fit for him. I’m the mom of a 5-year-old son who will be entering Kindergarten in Fall 2008 in Chicago. This is a blog about a parent who is about to dive into CPS… the Chicago Public School system and the ongoing anxiety that will likely follow. This is who I was when I started this blog in 2008 when my son was entering Kindergarten: Now we have some time to relax until college applications start. After starting the blog before Kindergarten, we made to the next big step. My son is starting High School at Jones College Prep this year.

Banana boat sunscreen recall list 202111/23/2023 But please don't abandon sunscreen altogether. Still, if you have one of the recalled sunscreens, the recall notice says you should stop using it and discard it. But these findings and the recall should not be a cause for panic. So, yes, small exposures over a lifetime can add up to increase your risk for cancer and it's worth finding ways to reduce your exposure to the chemical. ![]() Common chemical sunscreen ingredients like avobenzone and oxybenzone are not secretly benzene even though they may sound similar, cosmetics chemist Stephen Alain Ko, explained on Instagram. But, to date, exposure to benzene in personal care products hasn't been linked to actual cancer cases.Īlso, know that the presence of benzene in these sunscreens doesn't have anything to do with whether or not the product is chemical- or mineral-based. There's not as much research about how much benzene is absorbed through the skin, Dr. Three aerosol sunscreen sprays by Banana Boat have been recalled in Australia and New Zealand due to concerns over the presence of benzene. One additional batch has been added to the original recall announced on July 29, 2022. It's also used in the manufacturing processes for plastics, nylon, and rubber. SHELTON, Conn., Janu Edgewell Personal Care Company (NYSE: EPC) today expanded its voluntary nationwide recall of three batches of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 to the consumer level as outlined in the table below. The truth is that we are all probably getting exposed to small amounts of benzene on a daily basis through inhaling gasoline, car exhaust, or cigarette smoke, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains. In products like this, benzene is not purposely added but rather a trace contaminant, meaning it's an impurity in another ingredient, cosmetics chemist Michelle Wong, Ph.D., explains on her blog Lab Muffin. But the situation here is more complicated than it seems. Of course, finding out that a carcinogen has been hanging out in a product you put on your skin is worrying-especially so when that product is something you normally count on for protection. So far only Neutrogena and Aveeno have recalled their products. But the issue of benzene in sunscreens first popped up in late May when Valisure, an independent online pharmacy and testing company, released a report showing the presence of the chemical in 78 batches of products from major brands, including Neutrogena, Banana Boat, CVS Health, Sun Bum, Walgreens, and more. ![]() This recall is a direct result of the company's own internal testing.

Invisible cloak project11/22/2023 ![]() When the cloak is not being used, the object along the path of the traveling electromagnetic wave causes the wave to scatter. Otherwise, the electromagnetic waves would bump into the object and scatter in different directions. The researchers found that these layers can hide whatever object they cloak from interacting with electromagnetic waves. The cloak was made out of a gradient-index material with seven superthin layers that each had different electric properties. “The underlying theory can be applied to other wave phenomenon including acoustic and heat waves,” said Yang Hao, professor of antennas and electromagnetics at Queen Mary University of London, who led the study.įor the study, Hao and his colleagues coated a curved metal plate surface, about the size of a tennis ball, with their cloak. In other words, the study suggests a way to make such surfaces invisible. Their research, published in the journal Scientific Reports last week, demonstrates how a so-called “surface wave cloak” can make curved surfaces appear flat when they come in contact with electromagnetic waves. Now, scientists in the United Kingdom have moved a step forward in the real-world quest for invisibility. Rowling storybooks, the young wizard Harry inherited a magical cloak that could make anyone who put it on instantly invisible. "It is possible in principle, but not at this time," Semouchkina says. The world doesn’t have a “Harry Potter”-like invisibility cloak quite yet, but various research teams around the world have been making progress in figuring out how to build one.Ĭreating a cloak that can render a person invisible has been the ongoing dream of materials scientists and Harry Potter fans alike. "The most exciting applications will be at the frequencies of visible light."īeing able to cloak visible light would mean a real-world invisibility cloak, which would have military and police applications, just to name a few. "Starting from these experiments, we want to move to higher frequencies and smaller wavelengths," Semouchkina says. They have been able to cloak metal cylinders two to three inches in diameter and three to four inches high so far. Next up is the use of ceramic resonators and microwave frequencies, with which the researchers plan to hide larger objects, since microwaves are longer than infrared light. Her invisibility cloak uses glass resonators arranged in the shape of a cylinder, which produces the magnetic resonance required to bend light waves around an object, making it invisible. ![]() "Ours is the first to do the cloaking of cylindrical objects with glass," Semouchkina says. ![]() In computer simulations, the cloak made tiny objects hit by infrared waves disappear from sight. Other researchers have used metal rings and wires to create the illusion, but Semouchkina's research uses glass resonators. Their research was recently published in the journal Applied Physics Letters, and was supported partly by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Semouchkina is an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Tech, and has been working with colleagues at Pennsylvania State University on the invisibility cloak project. Michigan Technological University professor Elena Semouchkina is working on making an invisibility cloak a reality, with her research into making small objects appear invisible, using magnetic resonance and glass refraction. Aer sling x pac11/22/2023 ![]() ![]() They feel nice and cushy against the shoulders without any digging-in sensation around the edges. The shoulder straps are well-padded with dense foam and are covered in breathable mesh. Aer City Pack | They weren’t stingy with the mesh and padding here. Though the size is relatively small, that’s not to say Aer’s been stingy with the harness system. Coming in at a small but respectable 14-liters, there’s enough space to keep the average urban dweller properly equipped. Since the City Pack is a daypack meant for day-to-day adventures around the city, the capacity isn’t anything crazy. Aer’s designs are clearly working for them, and if it ain’t broke, why try to fix it? External Components Left: Tom Wahlin, Height: 6’2” (188 cm), Torso: 19.25” (49 cm) | Right: Lauren Maternowski, Height: 5’6” (168 cm), Torso: 16.5” (42 cm) It’s not overly different from the well-established mold of urban design, so the City Pack blends in nicely. Aer City Pack | No DNA test required here folks.īranding appears minimal, with only small Hypalon tabs bearing Aer’s name, but we overall still dig the fairly simplistic approach to styling. Each has its own practical merit, though choosing based on aesthetic preference is just as valid. The X-Pac version is made with, well, X-Pac, and has better weather resistance, while the Gray’s 900D Ecoya eco-dyed polyester has a smoother texture. The hardware is also easy to adjust, which is important for keeping things comfortable.Īt the time of writing this review, there’s also a Gray and X-Pac version, each featuring a different fabric for the shell. ![]() Stains do sometimes stick to the shell, but they’re easily wiped off in most cases. Plus, they’re not jingly like in earlier Aer products. The zippers slide along nicely, whether it’s the front pocket’s AquaGuard zipper or the reverse coil zipper of the top quick-grab pocket. We haven’t had trouble with them in the past because of their durability, and the City Pack is no exception. ![]() Yep, we have the usual quality materials on the City Pack: 1680D CORDURA Ballistic Nylon, YKK zippers, and Duraflex plastic hardware. Aer City Pack | The Black colorway gets 1680D CORDURA Nylon. That’s brand identity for you, and for Aer’s gear, the fit and finish of the product means just as much as aesthetic. We’ve definitely seen this before, and bonus points if you have as well-it’s very similar to Aer’s own Travel Pack 2. Even in this discreet Black colorway, one can see the company’s usual styling cues, arguably the most prominent of which is the front horizontal zipper. The City Pack wears Aer’s signature styling proudly. As per usual, there’s a fair amount of details to go through with anything Aer-related, so let’s jump into it. Spoiler alert: the tweak works, and our backs appreciate it. The City Pack also carries well, thanks to a few tweaks to the standard Aer back panel we’re used to seeing, which we definitely noticed during our testing. However, there is something to be said about having too much organization packed into a small package. To be more specific, the City Pack has a ton of organization inside for tech items, whether big or small-remarkably so for a daypack coming in at just 14-liters. Aer City Pack | We don’t mind if the soon-to-be-discovered cafe is on the other side of the city. At its heart, the City Pack is Aer manifesting its forte in travel gear designed with practical features in mind. As the name suggests, this is a backpack designed specifically for the adventurer who likes to explore the urban jungle. Sometimes two shoulder straps are just better than one or none, and so alongside the City Sling 2 and Split Kit is the City Pack.

Captain planet planeteers11/22/2023 ![]() In the beginning of the series, Gaia assembles a modern-day team of "Planeteers" from several nations. In situations that the Planeteers cannot resolve alone, they can combine their powers to summon Captain Planet, a super hero, who possesses all of their powers magnified, symbolizing the premise that the combined efforts of a team are stronger than its individual parts. The Planeteers use transportation (usually a flying machine called a Geo-Cruiser) based on solar power to avoid causing pollution themselves. Gaia uses her "Planet Vision" to discover where the most devastating destruction is occurring (in most episodes one or more of the Eco-Villans is behind it) and sends the Planeteers to help solve the problem. These five are dubbed the Planeteers and are tasked with defending the Earth from the greatest of disasters and making efforts to educate mankind to keep others from happening. Realizing that the damage is extensive, Gaia sends five magic rings, four with the power to control an element of nature and one controlling the element of Heart, to five chosen youths across the globe: Kwame from Africa, Wheeler from North America, Linka from the Soviet Union (changed to Eastern Europe after the Soviet Union's collapse), Gi from Asia, and Ma-Ti from South America.
